Call of Duty fans have been waiting for this moment with Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer finally launching at midnight tonight.
This isn’t a remaster of the very popular MW2 that was released in 2009, but instead a direct sequel to Modern Warfare which was released in 2019.
The midnight launch is only for consoles, with the full release on PC at 6 am tomorrow morning. As this is a regional midnight launch, some fans have joked about flying to New Zealand for the launch, who get an 11-hour head start on us in South Africa and a 17-hour head start on players in North America.
Xbox players would usually get around this by doing a region switch to New Zealand however, Activision tweeted that you might have some trouble if trying to do so.
Launch PSA: If you are trying to change your console’s region setting in order to access #MWII early, you will experience connectivity issues and may be locked out of the game until the official launch time of your region.

Modern Warfare 2’s campaign was released last week and received a good response, with many praising the incredible graphics and attention to detail. Warzone 2.0 will also be a feature of the new MW2 but will only be launching on the 16th of November. Warzone 2.0 will remain completely free, meaning no subscription to PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live in order to play.
Players who wait until the midnight launch of the latest COD’s often like to grind out the weapon camos and will be pleased as Activision has announced a much more streamlined experience this week, with more simple weapon challenges. While it will still be a grind to get all the camos, you won’t have to get double kills while doing a handstand. Complete all the weapon challenges and you’ll receive the Orion Camo, seen below:

The game comes in two editions, the Vault Edition gives you a Red Team 141 Operator Pack, which includes 4 Operators: Ghost, Soap, Farah and Price. You’ll also receive the FJX Cinder weapon vault and the Battle Pass for 1 season with 50 tier skips.
Xbox fans who intend on playing tonight better have a fast internet connection. A 63GB update has already gone live for MW2, PlayStation has also received a significantly smaller update with the file size being just 2GB. If you plan on having the campaign and multiplayer downloaded together, the file size of MW2 will easily exceed 100GB.
The MW2 price is the same across all platforms starting at a whopping R1,379 for the standard version, and R1,850 for the Vault Edition. You can pre-order from PlayStation, Xbox or Steam and pre-install ahead of tonight’s launch.
