Sega’s First Blockchain Game Is On The Way

Sonic the Hedgehog creators, SEGA, have recently announced their first blockchain game will be developed by Japanese blockchain company Double Jump Tokyo.

Double Jump Tokyo is not new to the world of crypto gaming, they developed the online role-playing game My Crypto Heroes, as well as MyCryptoSaga, which is a poker-like mind card game that utilises blockchain technology to allow up to 4 players to enjoy real-time competition.

“In this game, double jump.tokyo plans to use the IP of SEGA CORPORATION, “ SANGOKUSHI TAISEN “ that includes incredible Japanese artwork players can enjoy while playing.” stated Hironobu Ueno, CEO and Founder of double jump.tokyo Inc.

The Sangokushi Taisen series, for those unfamiliar, is an action-packed trading card game that is primarily played in Japanese arcades.

The game will be based on the theme of “Sangokushi” (Three Kingdoms) and will feature trading card mechanics while utilising the Japanese blockchain project Oasys.

“With a unique architecture optimised for blockchain games, Oasys aims to solve obstacles for gamers, offering fast transactions and zero gas fees and providing users with a more comfortable gameplay experience,” said Hironobu.

The past few years have seen a rise in the use of blockchain and non-fungible tokens (NFT), which are digital assets on a blockchain that represent ownership of physical or digital items. Traditional gaming mechanics like collectables have been given NFT assets’ unique ownership.

Sega provided additional information about its Super Game project earlier this year, though at the time the company’s NFT plans were still in flux. Despite the intense debate and widespread hostility toward the technology, plans to incorporate it do seem to be moving forward as Sega trademarked “Sega NFT” in January of this year.
