Intel reveals 13th Gen processors

Intel is hosting its next Intel Innovation event this week, outfitted in a “Bringing the geek back” T-shirt, CEO Pat Gelsinger got the company’s keynote underway yesterday unveiling new hardware, software, processors, as well as security and developer platforms.

The new 13th Gen Intel Core family includes six new unlocked desktop processors with up to 24 cores and 32 threads and clock speeds up to 5.8 GHz

Intel says that its new processors will offer improved overclocking performance on both the P- and E-cores as well as the system’s DDR5 memory. The company has also updated its simple one-click overclocking feature and Intel Speed Optimizer to support the 13th gen processors.

Now, if you are wondering what the performance improvements over the current gen are, Intel said in its keynote that the 13th gen offers up to 15% improved single-threaded performance and up to 41% better multi-threaded performance across its processor line-up.

With the introduction of Intel Core “K” processors, the 13th Gen Intel Core desktop family consists of 22 processors and over 125 partner system designs.

Launching alongside the 13th Gen Intel Core desktop processors is the new Intel 700 Series chipset which adds eight additional PCIe Gen 4.0 lanes to your system and gives you up to 28 lanes when combined with PCIe Gen 3.0. The new chipset also adds improved USB connectivity speed with USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps). Intel also looked at the speed at which peripherals and networking devices can communicate with your CPU and upgraded DMI (Direct Media Interface) to Gen 4.0.

If all of this talk of new specs is making you worry about compatibility, then Intel thought of you too. You won’t need to upgrade to an Intel 700 series chipset motherboard to make use of Intel’s 13th Gen CPUs, your Intel 600 series chipset motherboard will work just fine with the new processors.

“We are raising the standards of PC performance once again with our latest generation of flagship 13th Gen Intel Core Processors,” said Michelle Johnston Holthaus, executive vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group at Intel. “The 13th Gen Intel Core family is the latest example of how Intel is enabling amazing experiences to happen on the PC – at scale and across all PC product segments. Combine this with an industry-leading partner ecosystem and new solutions like Intel Unison, and together we are showing the world what’s truly possible with the PC experience going forward.”

Intel’s 13th Gen Core K-series processors will be available from 20 October 2022, with pricing ranging from $294 (around R5,300) for the graphics-less Core i5-13600KF and $589 for the high-end i9-13900K (around R10,700). No word yet on the local availability of these processors.
