It’s no secret that I love old-school horror films and the video game adaptions that come from them. From Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th: The Game to Freddy Krueger in Dead by Daylight, combining multiplayer video games with 1980s slashers is just a formula for success. So it’s no surprise that Killer Klowns From Outer Space was one of the most exciting reveals on the opening night of Gamescom 2022.
For those unaware, Killer Klowns From Outer Space was a 1988 comedy-horror movie about killer clowns from… outer space. The “klowns” were aliens who had come to Earth in a circus-tent-shaped spaceship and started killing horny teenagers and dumb adults. The film was every bit as low-budget and amazingly cringy as you’d imagine – and now, all this epicness is set to invade the world of video games in 2023.
Last night, comedy horror fans were treated to the first trailer for Killer Klowns from Outer Space, a 3v7 asymmetrical horror game from Randy Greenback, the same guy responsible for Friday the 13th: The Game. In the game, a team of three “klowns” will set out to hunt seven human players. Both sides will come with unique character classes, and the randomly generated map will be “ever-changing”.
Anyone who remembers the wacky film from their childhoods knows players are in for a treat. In the movie, the Klowns were known for doing ridiculous things like casting dinosaur-shaped shadows that came to life and ate people and cocooned people inside cotton candy. The klowns only weakness was their big round clown noses that needed to be shot to kill them—the perfect setup for a multiplayer video game.
While we don’t know many details surrounding the upcoming release, we know that the game will arrive on PC via Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in early 2023. The game will also be released as a live-service title, with multiple content updates planned for post-launch.
Film fans should know that the adaption is in good hands, being made in collaboration with the movie’s original creators, the Chiodo Brothers, who will serve as executive producers. The movie’s composer, John Massari, will also fully score the game.
