In June, Incredible Connection introduced us to their new All Star Gaming platform. What seemed like just a snazzy marketing effort at first has turned out to be a much broader strategy by the company to give gamers more than just a retail experience.
Over the last two weeks, Incredible Connection quietly launched a series of game tournaments and some social media channels to host the tournament content.
The first of five planned tournaments will kick off next week, 6 to 7 August, with Fortnite players getting a chance to battle it out in solos for their share of the R50,000 prize pool. Two weeks later, between 19 and 24 August, CS:GO will take centre stage with a 5v5, double elimination, tournament and an equally impressive R50,000 prize pool.
There is a Fifa 21 and two other tournaments expected, but details have not been confirmed yet. Incredible Connection also brought on some familiar faces in the South African gaming scene to help them spread the word.
We had a quick chat with Sam “TechGirl” Wright, freelance esports shoutcaster and a tech/gaming content creator, about the Incredible Connection All Star Gaming tournament and what gamers can expect. “Incredible Connection has a massive reach so when a company like this hosts a Fortnite or CS:Go tournament, you find that most entrants are casual gamers, or just a bunch of friends who want to experience some competitive gaming.”
She adds that this is important to the growth of gaming and esports in South Africa as it introduces new gamers to tournaments and the local esports scene.
For many gamers, tournaments like this will be their first attempt at participating in esports. Wright says many gamers simply do not know where to go when they want to enter the world of competitive gaming. “With the Incredible Connection All Star Gaming platform there is a potential to reach gamers who would otherwise not have an opportunity to play in a competitive tournament.”
