Nintendo Switch gets OLED upgrade

The Nintendo Switch is getting an upgrade that will see a larger screen, more storage space, and a wired LAN port added to the much-loved gaming console.

While rumours were rife that the Switch might get a 4K upgrade, the company announced yesterday that the new Nintendo Switch OLED would retain its resolution of 720p/1080p (Handheld/Docked) resolution. Still, gamers will now get a slightly larger but far better, 7-inch OLED touchscreen. The improvement that OLED screens offer over normal LED panels is quite significant. For one thing, OLED panels offer wider colour ranges, has lower power consumption and is much brighter than LED panels.

The console will retain its custom Nvidia Tegra X1 chipset and will be slightly larger than its predecessor due to the larger screen. There is now also a flip-out stand allowing the screen to be placed at a comfortable angle should you be playing games on the couch or at a table.

In Nintendo’s announcement video, the company said gamers could also expect improved audio quality from the console’s built-in speakers.

If you’ve been battling with wireless gaming due to poor Wi-Fi reception, you’ll be glad to hear that the Nintendo Switch doc now has a wired LAN port so that you can connect the console directly to your network.
