Age of Empires 4 is out this holiday season

Microsoft debuted a new gameplay trailer of its next wololo-’em-up at its E3 Xbox show this weekend, and has now also confirmed the game’s minimum system requirements for PC and a launch date.

Age of Empires 4 is out on 28 October on PC, and because it’s a first-party Microsoft game, it will be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers at the same time too. The game features four narrative campaigns, spanning some 35 missions and 500 years of medieval history from the Dark Ages up to the Renaissance. The Norman campaign is the only one we know about for the moment, but other civilisations include China, the Delhi Sultanate, the Abbasid Dynasty, England, and Mongolia.

According to previews of the game published on IGN and The Verge in April, Age of Empires 4 introduces asymmetrical design, making each faction more unique. The Mongols, for example, have been revamped since their previous appearance in Age of Empires 2, and debut some new mechanics to the franchise – most significantly, perhaps, Mongolian buildings can be moved to new locations on the map. This convenience, however, means no permanent structures like farms or even walls, so you’re going to have to think different. Baby steppes, Genghis.
