Because you should be. Netflix’s must-binge new show introduces a unique sci-fantasy post-apocalyptic family drama about a hybrid half-human, half-deer boy (and instant cosplay icon) named Gus who desperately wants to find his mom. But things get complicated.
Based on the DC comic book series of the same name by Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth starts at the end. With most of humanity wiped out by a viral pandemic, Gus and his dad have made a home for themselves in the secluded woods of Yosemite National Park in California. But when their dreamy tranquility is interrupted by bad guys, Gus must evacuate his safe space and step into an entirely different sort of reality – one that isn’t exactly welcoming to his kind.
The show stars 11-year old Drew Barrymore gender-bend clone Christian Convery in one of the most compelling kid casting choices since Stranger Things, and Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones) as Tommy “Big Man” Jeppard, an ex-pro footballer with a grudgy disposition and a secret. The relationship dynamic between them is immediately reminiscent of The Mandalorian, but even if it’s in service of the same predictable redemption trope, it’s also emotionally provocative – this trip to Colorado is going to break your heart.
Sweet Tooth is out now on Netflix.
