Looks like Borderlands 3 is getting crossplay in the not-too-distant future, just not for PlayStation, because reasons.
Gearbox Software president and CEO Randy Pitchford decided to stir up some animosity recently with a tweet about crossplay coming to Borderlands 3 for all platforms, except PlayStation.
Good news or bad news first? Good News: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms. Bad News: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.

Neither Gearbox nor 2K have expanded on the exact reason why PlayStation had to be excluded from the upcoming update, but it’s probably because Sony charges a fee for crossplay in order to make up for the potential loss in revenue. If they allow crossplay, your friend doesn’t have to buy a PlayStation just to play with you, something that was definitely going to happen. So they miss out on money. Seems 2K doesn’t want to pay the fee, but that’s just speculation and who doesn’t love a Sony pile-on?
It’s unclear if Microsoft/Steam/Google charge a similar fee for crossplay. If they do, maybe it’s not as high as the one Sony demands. Maybe 2K just wants to make a statement. Whatever the reason, this crossplay update is apparently ready to go, so it can’t be far away. Soon, Xbox, PC, and Stadia players will be looting and shooting together as God intended.
