Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

G.I. Joe film franchise gets the reboot treatment with Snake Eyes origin story

Everyone’s favourite mute ninja G.I. Joe is getting a super-chatty origin story in the hopes of giving the G.I. Joe film universe another chance at success.

After two over-the-top-action-heavy G.I. Joe film adaptations, we’re getting more action, but make it ninjas this time. Everyone loves ninjas! Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is a reboot for the franchise that hasn’t seen a lot of love from critics. It follows “tenacious loner” Snake Eyes as he is taught the ways of the ninja warrior by the Arashikage clan in Japan, after saving the life of their heir apparent. But then, Snake Eyes’ secret (apparently dodgy) past is revealed and his honour and allegiance must be tested with guns, knives, and car flips.

I also assume his face and voice must be destroyed at some point, for canon reasons. Which is a pity, because it’s Henry Golding’s face.

Aside from Golding (Crazy Rich Asians), the cast includes Andrew Koji (Warrior), Úrsula Corberó (Money Heist), Samara Weaving (Guns Akimbo), Haruka Abe (Kiss Me First), Takehiro Hira (Giri/Haji), and Iko Uwais (The Raid). The film is directed by Robert Schwentke (RED, The Captain).

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins hits cinemas on 23 July.

Hands up if you, as a child, just assumed Snake Eyes was also blind. Just me? Cool…
