Microsoft’s potential acquisition of Discord was denied, so Sony slid into their DMs and took an ownership stake in the mega-popular communication service. If you know what I mean.
Sony Interactive Entertainment recently announced their partnership with Discord after making an undisclosed minority investment in the company. Wasting no time at all, their teams are already working on integrating Discord into the PlayStation Network, Sony’s digital media entertainment service, aiming to enhance your social experience on PlayStation by early next year.
Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.
Discord was recently rumoured to be flirting with a number of other big-name companies, interested in rigorous acquisition, before showing those wealthy suitors the door in favour of potentially playing the IPO field, unsatisfied with the idea of commitment to only one partnership. But it seems rugged Sony caught their eye, winning Discord over with talk of passion, empowerment, and building communities together.
But that’s how it always starts, isn’t it? Don’t be surprised when Discord starts behaving differently because “that’s how Sony likes it”. It’s only a matter of time before they go vegan.
