Because you should. Launched on Netflix this weekend, Sony’s new animated comedy mashes up a dysfunctional family road trip with an inconveniently timed robot apocalypse, meme jokes, and homicidal home appliances, and it’s a blast-o-rama.
Directed by Mike Rianda (Gravity Falls) with producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse) and it’s not exactly subtle about its creative credits, The Mitchells vs. The Machines is 113 minutes of gleeful chaos and TikTok-trendy visual aesthetics, and features English screen queen Olivia Colman as an evil AI so now you know you can’t miss it. It’s funny, clever, and sentimental without feeling awkward or contrived – this is a movie that parodies internet and contemporary pop culture with love, not some kind of cringecore technophobic disdain. Also, Monchi the pug is, like, an entire #mood. And the Furby scene? Iconic.
The Mitchells vs. The Machines is out now on Neflix.
