PlayStation and Xbox profits up in the worst economy since the 1930s

Stuck at home in a global pandemic? We weren’t planning to go out, anyway, but the extra existential dread was a convenient excuse to buy games and consoles.

According to Sony’s most recent financials, the company has sold over 7.8 million PS5 units since the console’s November launch despite consistent problems with availability, and about one million PS4 consoles in the same time. PS Plus subscriptions also increased almost 15 percent on the previous year, now counting some 47.6 million users.

Although Microsoft hasn’t disclosed exact Xbox Series S/X sales numbers, its gaming division reports a 50 percent total Q4 increase on the previous year, including a 34 percent increase in content and services, and a 232 percent increase in hardware sales, with $3.53 billion in the bank. Total revenue for Xbox in 2020, industry analyst Daniel Ahmad explains on Twitter, increased from $10.3 billion in 2019 to $15 billion.
