Developed by Heart Shaped Games, We Are The Caretakers is an XCOM-esque squad management RPG set in a sci-fi afrofuturist universe. But instead of countering an invasion of aliens, you’re countering an invasion of poachers. You and your arcane squad of protectors are tasked with protecting the ecosystem from all those that would do it harm.
But you can’t just charge in and mow all the bad guys down in turn-based, space-magic combat – conservation is more complicated than that. You’ll have to manage your reputation to get the people on your side, there’s also funding to consider, Caretaker training to schedule, and new technologies to research. However, if none of that’s your deal, there’s also a survival mode full of procedurally generated wildlife. Everyone loves a survival mode.
And you’re not just protecting imaginary future-space rhinos, Heart Shaped Games is going to donate 10 percent of net revenue from game sales to the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Rhino Recovery Fund – helping to protect and restore rhino populations across Africa and Asia.
We Are The Caretakers is currently only available in Early Access on Steam, with about six months to go before the official launch. It will also be coming to Xbox later this year.
