CD Projekt banked $303 million in 2020, despite Cyberpunk 2077’s messy launch

The company has announced two preliminary sales numbers for last year, with reported profits three times over its previous record in 2015.

According to GamesIndustry, CD Projekt’s 2020 financials include PLN 2.14 billion ($562 million) in total sales and net profits of PLN 1.15 billion ($303 million), busting previous records of PLN 798 million ($210 million) and PLN 342 million ($89.8 million) respectively from 2015, the same year that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched.

Remember that besides CD Projekt Red, its game development studio, CD Projekt also operates its digital distribution service GOG.com – but it’s hard to imagine that Cyberpunk 2077’s eight million or so pre-orders didn’t boost those sales numbers. For perspective, the company’s 2020 total sales revenue quadrupled from 2019. What even is bad publicity.

Now six months out since launch, CD Projekt Red has dropped multiple updates for Cyberpunk 2077 to resolve some of the game’s problems – but until March, this process was impeded by a security breach. This week, however, the studio promised that it’s going to be okay, Cyberpunk 2077 can be fixed, please standby, and a new hotfix was released on Wednesday.
