Fans of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime may or may not be aware that another (yes another) reboot project has been slowly playing out over the past 14 years. Well, Rebuild of Evangelion, a retelling of the original anime in four films, is finally complete with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time currently screening in Japan. The studio has released two teaser clips that might just get you psyched to fire up the old EVA one more time.
Rebuild of Evangelion is a film quartet that reboots the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime with new settings, characters, scenes, and yet another ending. It is also meant to make the famously confusing franchise more accessible to non-fans. The reboot started in 2007 with the first film, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, then came Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (2009), and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (2012) – excellent naming all round.
The final film, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, is currently only being screened in Japan, but it should eventually get a worldwide release like the others in the film series. No release date has been announced, as yet. Check out these clips if you want a little taste of what to expect.
SPOILER ALERT: these clips contain spoilers.
I’m a fan of the original anime, and I have no idea what’s going on, but this looks pretty awesome.
