The aesthetically cinematic Ghost of Tsushima is going to become actually cinematic with a film adaptation. So, we’ve come full circle.
Based around actual historical events and crafted to resemble actual samurai films, PlayStation’s super-popular Ghost of Tsushima is about to become a movie based on a game based on a movie, because there are no new ideas (I checked).
According to Deadline, the Ghost of Tsushima film is being directed by Chad Stahelski (all of the John Wick movies) for Sony Pictures in partnership with PlayStation Productions. Peter Kang will oversee production on behalf of the game’s development studio, Sucker Punch Productions. The studio is also an executive producer.
Set in 13th century Japan, Ghost of Tsushima follows samurai Jin Sakai on a quest to defend the island of Tsushima from invading Mongols. Along the way, he must make use of less-than-honourable tactics, and pat all the adorable foxes, while cherry blossoms swirl on the winds of his inner torment. The game was widely praised for its cinematic aesthetic and even features a Kurosawa Mode that allows players to experience the game in a way that mirrors the legendary Akira Kurosawa’s film style. Also, Ghost of Tsushima has sold over 6.5 million copies since its release in July 2020, so obviously they were going to make a movie.
No doubt it’s going to be gorgeous.
