Prey and other less important Bethesda games are now available on Xbox Game Pass

With Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda concluded and updated on Wikipedia so you know it’s real, a selection of the company’s games have been added to the Xbox Game Pass library and you’re out of excuses to skip Arkane’s 2017 coffee cup trust sim Prey.

In my pre-website design revamp review of the game, I compared Prey with BioShock because I hadn’t (and haven’t, don’t @ me) played System Shock, the original game-like-this, and I’ve since compared Remedy’s Control with Prey, and I guess in the future, I’ll compare some other game with Control. Think of it like a family. But, like, a weird family. The kind of family you used to visit for the summers when you were a kid but you can’t remember now what they looked like, their faces are hazy and distorted, their eyes black, their fingers impossibly long, and you realise that maybe it’s because that’s actually what they looked like and that’s why mom used to cry every night when she thought you were sleeping and tell dad that she wishes we could just go home. You try not to think about it too much.

You know what I mean?

…

Anyway.

Prey is a game about trust. I mean, it’s about lots of things, but it’s mostly about trust. And not only the sort of trust that involves an unreliable narrator whose own questionable credibility and ambiguous purpose keep you guessing until the game’s astounding conclusion – that too, though – but also a more ordinary, a more banal sort of trust. The sort of trust, for example, that a coffee cup is a coffee cup.

And maybe a coffee cup is a coffee cup. But maybe it isn’t.

The point is, you can’t trust coffee cups.

You’ve got to play Prey. Trust me. I’m a coffee cup.

Other Bethesda games out on Xbox Game Pass today include Dishonored and its sequel, Skyrim, and The Evil Within, and most of them are available on console and PC.

Not Prey’s Mooncrash DLC, though, which sucks because it’s probably the most unique expansion ever. You’ve got to play that too. And when you’ve finished those two, don’t miss out on these 10 Xbox Game Pass games either. Weekend sorted.
