Prison escapee caught trying to buy Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War during lockdown in Britain

I know it’s a big download, but come on.

Clint Butler had been serving a 17-year prison sentence, for robbery and firearms offences, when he escaped Spring Hill Prison in November last year. He managed to evade recapture until January 2021, when the idea of going through lockdown without Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War became too much too bear, so he went into town with a friend to buy a copy.

Since nobody was meant to be out on the streets without a valid reason (y’know because lockdown), the pair were stopped by police after trying to avoid them. When asked why he was out on the street during lockdown, Butler replied:

I’ve come to get the new Call of Duty because I can’t sit around in lockdown.

When the police officer mentioned that they would be checking his details, Butler kicked the officer and immediately fell over – a scuffle ensued. The police officers had their bodycams turned on, so the majestically stupid encounter was captured in all it’s glory:

The police subsequently discovered Butler was the escapee they were looking for and he was sent back to jail, where his sentence has been extended by 13 months. In the words of Birmingham Police Superintendent Nick Rowe:

Quite why he decided to risk being returned to prison by making the idiotic decision to come into town during lockdown with a friend to buy a video game will remain a bit of a mystery.
