That’s according to Los Angeles Department of Convention & Tourism Development documents confirming that the show is a “cancelled live event” with “broadcast options” pending, so I guess we can expect some sort of virtual event instead.
Uploaded to ResetEra by user Rösti over the weekend, a section of the document published on the city’s website lists E3 as one of multiple cancelled events in 2021, with a “working on [it]” status for events in 2022 and 2023. Bummer, but also not exactly unexpected.
Citing other, presumably confidential documents “sent to game publishers”, VGC reported in February that E3 organiser the Entertainment Software Association was intending to go with a three-day virtual expo from 15-17 June, anyway.
It’s almost a year ago that the ESA announced that E3 2020 would be a no-show for the first time since its debut in 1995. On 12 March 2020, when I wrote that article, about 126,000 cases of COVID-19 had been reported and less than 5000 people had died. Reading those stats now feels so surreal.
