Bad news, Anthem fans, it seems that those Bloomberg rumours were true.
Turns out, EA executives did indeed meet a couple of weeks ago to decide the fate of the Anthem reboot. According to Austin studio director Christian Dailey’s recent update on the BioWare blog, things did not go well. If you were looking forward to the Anthem overhaul they’ve been working on since 2019, it’s not happening.
In the spirit of transparency and closure we wanted to share that we’ve made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (aka Anthem NEXT). We will, however, continue to keep the Anthem live service running as it exists today.
Launched with much hype and fanfare back in 2019, Anthem quickly gathered criticism for a range of issues, from load times, to questionable game mechanics, to it just being, well, boring. Then, there was all that drama about who was to blame (SPOILER ALERT: it was BioWare). Anthem has since been improved by a number of updates, but it was the promise of an entire overhaul that kept fans holding on. Well, it’s time to let go, friends.
Look at the upside, though. Cancelling Anthem NEXT allows BioWare to focus on other games people are almost guaranteed to like: the new Mass Effect and the next Dragon Age.
Moving forward, we need to laser focus our efforts as a studio and strengthen the next Dragon Age, and Mass Effect titles while continuing to provide quality updates to Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Since when has a new Mass Effect ever been bad?
