Seriously, since the Borderlands film adaptation was announced my feelings about it have gone from cautiously optimistic to WTF? Like I’m confused, but intrigued, but confused.
We first heard about a movie based on the super-successful, hyper-violent, full of glorious nonsense, Borderlands game franchise, back in February 2020. This adaptation makes sense, because the games are popular and popular things must become movies (it’s the rules). Then, Cate Blanchett was cast as Lilith, the fiery siren and mainstay of the series, which was interesting because Blanchett is a legit actor and not a terrible choice if she’s playing Lilith from some time around Borderlands 3.
Then, things got distressing (for fans) when Kevin Hart, known for his manic comedic style, was cast as soldier Roland, known for his rather stoic badassery. Either Hart is going to playing a very different character than everything we’ve seen him do before, or director Eli Roth hasn’t actually played Borderlands.
And now, Jamie Lee Curtis (who is wonderful) has been cast as Dr. Patricia Tannis, a brilliant scientist who is on all sorts of spectrums. WHAT IS GOING ON?!
We’ve got no real idea what the plot is going to be, other than rumours about a godawful reimagining where Lilith is a thief and has to protect Tiny Tina from an evil corporation by hiding on Pandora, or something. But the script, written by Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin, must be something if it’s attracting these highly skilled actors. Surely?
Unless they all lost a bet…
