The Anthem overhaul could be dead this week, for reals, maybe

As we’ve mentioned before, making games is hard. Overhauling a failed one is even harder-er.

About a year ago, BioWare announced that they were working on a overhaul of Anthem, their costly misstep into the Destiny genre of shared world shooter “experiences”, tentatively dubbed Anthem Next. Well, rumour has it that EA may be about to give up on the whole thing and purge it into whatever you purge things into in Anthem (I don’t know, I’ve never played it).

According to Bloomberg, who occasionally get things wrong so don’t freak out too much if you’re still playing for whatever reason, EA executives are set to meet this week to check up on the current state of Anthem Next and decide its fate. BioWare Austin’s Chris Daley did mention last year that the overhaul was going to be a massive undertaking, requiring a lot of time to complete. Time that, perhaps, is not on their side if these rumours are true.

I mean, technically it’s possible Anthem could pull a No Man’s Sky and rise, triumphant, from the ashes of our crushed expectations. We’ll have to wait and see. EA, apparently, does not comment on “rumor and speculation”.
