Netflix has confirmed the cast for its upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s goth-pop graphic novels, featuring Game of Thrones’ majestically-proportioned Brienne of Tarth as the queen of Hell.
Published by DC from 1989 to 1996, Gaiman’s The Sandman is a moody dark fantasy series based on multiple classical and contemporary mythologies about Dream, the very introspective and melancholy god of sleep, and his equally glum siblings and acquaintances. Although a TV version has been in and out of production since 2010 or so, The Sandman’s Lucifer – also a protagonist in a spin-off comic series – appears in the Warner Bros. show of the same name, starring Tom Ellis. In the Netflix production of The Sandman, however, Gwendoline Christie takes over as the charismatic archfiend.
She’s joined by Velvet Buzzsaw’s Tom Sturridge as series protagonist Dream (with an almost uncanny resemblance between them too), The Witches’ Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Gone Girl’s Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Game of Thrones co-star Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, and English comedians Asim Chaudhry and Sanjeev Bhaskar as Abel and Cain.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed a launch for the show, but filming was started in October 2020 already.
