First announced in 2019, if ambiguous plans that haven’t actually been realised a year later can even constitute “announced”, the SABC has reiterated its intention to launch a video and audio streaming service but isn’t telling much more for now. With the constant uncertainty of a global pandemic, I guess it’s a comfort that some things are the same, forever.
“The SABC can confirm that it is planning to launch its video and audio streaming services in line with the ever-changing industry trends and consumer needs,” SABC rep Mmoni Seapolelo tells News24. “At this stage, the SABC is not in a position to provide more detail due to the commercial sensitivity of the information.”
It’s almost exactly a copy-paste of the company’s previous statement, but with bonus extra prevarication about “commercial sensitivity”, whatever that means. Maybe something about TV licences? According to News24, the SABC’s streaming service is expected to launch in 2021 to the same public that consistently skips on paying those TV licences so I dunno who’s going to pay for this.
