The power of 90s animated television compels you!
It’s been 22 years (yes), since Animaniacs ended and now it’s being resurrected to deliver its signature pop culture reference-riddled satire, with a zany, child-friendly facade, to a new audience. But probably mostly its old audience, who are all over 30 by now and just looking for something, anything, to make them feel alive again.
For the youth out there, Animaniacs came out in 1993 and centred on the wacky adventures of the Warner siblings Yakko, Wakko, and (their sister) Dot – cartoon characters from the 1930s who were locked away in the Warner Bros. studio water tower for being agents of chaos. Although primarily aimed at children, Animaniacs featured a lot of adult humour for the sake of any parents in the room. The show ended in 1998.
Fans will recall that the cartoon was filled with an abundance of side-characters like Chicken Boo, Slappy Squirrel, and Buttons and Mindy, but it seems only Pinky and the Brain are making a proper comeback alongside the trio. And they’ll all be voiced by the original actors. Which is probably why Wacko is sounding a bit rough.
Animaniacs is set to premiere on Hulu on 20 November. Hulu hasn’t launched in South Africa, yet, but that’s what VPNs are for.
