Apparently, new Dexter limited series showrunner Clyde Phillips doesn’t want to “betray the audience” by pretending Dexter’s universally-panned finale doesn’t exist. It’s way too late for that, sir.
Phillips featured on a recent podcast by The Hollywood Reporter in which he dealt Dexter fans the crushing blow that the new limited series won’t be a reboot of the last few seasons.
We’re not going to betray the audience and say, ‘Whoops, that was all a dream.’ What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years.
That would be the opposite of a betrayal, though. He also confusingly suggests the new series is not a ninth season, says that it gives them a chance to create a “second finale”, and that they “basically do get to start from scratch”, so who even knows what to expect at this point.
We want this to not be Dexter Season 9. Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. In so far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was.
Basically: they’re not fixing it, but they are, but they’re not, and lumberjack Dexter is canon, so just deal with it. Who is this even for? According to Phillips, there’s such a “hunger for Dexter out there” that they just had to make this new series. Who are you people? Are you why we can’t have nice things?
My next-best option for the new Dexter series, is that it’s 10 episodes of a man-hunt that culminate in Dexter finally getting caught and sentenced to death for the absolute butt-load of murder he’s committed. I mean, he is a serial killer.
