Unfortunately, Worms Rumble will not be making its way to Xbox and oh no… why…
Developed by Team17, Worms Rumble is the battle royale Worms that nobody asked for. Well, nobody that is a fan of the original Worms franchise. Everyone else will probably find it quite fun. Although, the marketing seems to suggest it’s aimed at Worms fans, which is confusing.
This is Worms, reinvented.
Well, yes, but reinvented so hard it’s no longer Worms, so why even link the two? Worms is a turn-based, tactical artillery game (like a wormy mashup of Lemmings and Gorillas) with destructible terrain. Worms Rumble is a real-time, 32-player battle royale (like every other battle royale but viewed from the side) with solid terrain. The fact that you play as a worm with access to some outrageous weaponry is the only similarity.
Which won’t matter to a lot of people. Worms Rumble looks like an absurd bit of cartoony escapism if you ignore its heritage. They should really consider adding destructible terrain, though.
Worms Rumble is due to launch for PC (Steam) and PlayStation 4 some time in December. However, you can play the cross-platform beta from 6 November if you’re super keen.
