Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War borrows Apex Legends’ ping system

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is moving into beta territory and it’s bringing a new ping system and FOV slider for consoles with it.

Developer Treyarch’s latest blog post details what’s new in the Cold War beta and, alongside a number of new maps and game modes, there’s a new ping system, a la Apex Legends, and Field of View slider functionality for everyone.

So, in Cold War multiplayer you’ll be able to ping objectives, loot, locations, enemies, and even enemy Scorestreaks, instead of having to talk to people (always a plus), for maximum coordination (and obligatory frantic ping-spam). By default, it will be mapped to D-pad left on controllers and the Z key on keyboards, but you will be able to re-map it to one of the bumpers, like a normal person.

Then, FOV sliders used to be a PC-only thing, but Cold War is opening that up to all platforms “for a globally connected, cross-play experience”. This means everyone will be able to adjust the height and width of their in-game field of view. Just be aware that straying from the default may reduce frame rates.

If you want to take part in the Cold War Open Beta, the PlayStation-exclusive weekend starts today, 8 October, if you got a digital pre-order. All other PS4 players can start up the Open Beta from 9 October. This exclusive weekend ends on 12 October. Then, everyone else gets a turn, with cross-play enabled, from 15 – 19 October (with the 15th and 16th reserved for digital pre-orders).
