Manufacturing issue reduces PS5 production numbers by millions

Update 16 September 2020, 11:30AM SAST: In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony has denied reports (originating from Bloomberg) that production on the PS5 has been reduced.

While we do not release details related to manufacturing, the information provided by Bloomberg is false. We have not changed the production number for PlayStation 5 since the start of mass production.

What a twist.

Don’t worry, it’s still more than Sony originally planned to make for the launch of the PlayStation 5.

An issue with the PS5’s core processing chip, designed by AMD, means that half the parts already produced reportedly didn’t meet the standards required to ship. This means that PS5 production has been reduced by about four million units. While this sounds like a lot (and it technically is), Sony still expects to ship 11 million units by the end of March 2021. And this number is still higher than their initial plan to only have five or six million units ready by the same time, which would have been fewer than they produced for the PS4 launch back in 2013.

We don’t know how many Xbox Series X units Microsoft is producing, or if their AMD chips have the same issue, so we can’t really tell if Sony’s production woes mean anything tangible in the war for next-gen domination. Both companies will surely be churning out as many consoles as they can in order to meet the increased popularity of gaming as a socially distant pastime in these viral times.
