It’s mostly just bats, bats all the way down.
In an interview with Den of Geek, co-writer Mattson Tomlin explained that The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), is less about the action and more about the emotion of being the world’s greatest, and most psychologically scarred, detective.
I think that really looking at Batman as somebody who has gone through this trauma, and then everything that he’s doing is then a reaction to that, rather than shy away from that, I think this film leans into that in some very fun and surprising ways.
Remember, kids, PTSD can be fun.
We already knew The Batman was going to be more of a noir take on the superhero vigilante’s story, focussing on his early days as a shady young detective in pointy ears, so this is just further warning not to expect too many explosions or CrossFit training montages. What you can expect, besides Robert Pattinson as Batman, is Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright as James (not quite commissioner yet) Gordon.
I’m feeling pretty good about this one.
For now, The Batman is set to release on 1 October 2021.
