It’s only been forever since the original Labyrinth came out, not long at all, but how will a sequel ever hope to compete with the true majesty of David Bowie’s crotch? It can’t.
Labyrinth, a puppet-riddled fantasy tale of child endangerment and sexual awakenings, came out in 1986. It starred Jennifer Connelly as Sarah, the prepubescent object of Jareth the Goblin King’s obsession, and the late, great, David Bowie as said Goblin King. It also featured intriguing questions about gender norms and sexuality, some memorable musical numbers, and a whole mess of Jim Henson puppets. It’s a cult classic and, now, it’s getting a sequel, because that’s just what we do now; sequels and reboots as far as the eye can see.
You can probably blame/thank The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance series for this; all those talented puppeteers got a taste of what it felt like to be wanted again in an entertainment era overwhelmed by CG effects. The upcoming Labyrinth sequel is a collaboration between TriStar Pictures and The Jim Henson Company, with Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) set to direct. It’s in the early days of development so there’s no news on the plot, cast, or release date, yet.
