Gearbox is fuelling the rumours that Cate Blanchett is in the running to play Lilith in the upcoming Borderlands adaptation, so that means it’s true, right?
We are incredibly excited about this news! Borderlands is shaping up to be an amazing movie!https://t.co/42VT8YUQkc pic.twitter.com/zJY7M7B5to

For the uninitiated, Borderlands’ Lilith is a Siren; one of a very small group of women (and that one time a guy) that develop mystical, superhuman abilities, signified by glowing, head-to-toe tattoos, in the Borderlands universe. Lilith was a playable character in the original game and then became a recurring NPC in the sequels. She’s badass, can walk through walls, and kills things with fire; what’s not to love?
Cate Blanchett understands campy, comedic action, after playing Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, and I feel like the Borderlands movie is going to need some of that Ragnarok energy if it’s going to succeed. It could also be a good sign that such a big name actor might actually want to be part of it, but you never know with game adaptations.
The Borderlands movie is being directed by Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel) and produced by Avi Arad (Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse), Ari Arad (Ghost in the Shell), and Erik Feig (The Spy Who Dumped Me). It’s being written by Craig Mazin who wrote several episodes of the Chernobyl miniseries and is also working on the Last of Us TV series adaptation.
