Castlevania Season 3

Castlevania season 4 is definitely happening

According to a recent blog post by creator Warren Ellis, Season 3 of Netflix’s Castlevania series did unusually well, so a fourth season is on the way.

Ellis wasn’t allowed to divulge the official Netflix numbers, but the third season of Castlevania (released in March) apparently did better than the previous season by “an order of magnitude”, with viewership in the “many, many millions”. Its unexpected popularity means we get to enjoy a fourth season of vampires, intrigue, gore, and sarcasm – hooray!

Ellis hopes that the show’s popularity will pave the way for more adult-oriented, animated, drama series, since the audience obviously exists.

If it turns out that this weird thing is what prised open the door on doing adult-oriented drama narrative in English language animation, I would be delighted. Because we just proved that the audience is there, in the same numbers that show up for live-action drama.

Netflix’s Castlevania is an adaptation of the Konami video game series, done in an anime art style that lends itself perfectly to the intricate action sequences and high drama. It follows monster hunter Trevor Belmont and magician Sypha Belnades and their efforts to combat Dracula’s demon-based vengequest against humanity. It’s also full of blood, gore, nudity, and religion, so avoid if you’re squeamish about all those things being mushed together.

You can watch all three seasons of Castlevania on Netflix.
