Xbox Series X Controller

The Xbox Series X controller still uses AA batteries because it’s what the people want

Well, it’s what 50 percent of the people want, and that’s a lot of people.

You’d think that fancy next-gen tech, like the Xbox Series X, would shun regular batteries in favour of having built-in rechargeable ones, like the PlayStation 4 did with its DualShock controller, but Xbox wants its players to have options.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, partner director of program management at Xbox Jason Ronald mentioned that customer feedback pretty much splits controller battery preference 50/50, so flexibility was key to making people happy with the Xbox Series X.

What it comes down to is when actually talking to gamers, it’s kind of polarising and there is a strong camp that really want AAs. So just giving flexibility is the way to please both [sets of] people… You can use a rechargeable battery pack and it works just like it does on the Elite, [but] it is a separate thing.

Yes, you’ll still be able to buy a rechargeable pack, almost certainly including a Play and Charge Kit. It is nice that it will remain optional with the Xbox Series X, since those rechargeable cells do degrade over time.

The Xbox Series X controller isn’t actually changing all that much. Updates include a slight reduction in size, for comfort and to accommodate smaller hands, matte triggers, a share button, and an “extra clicky” d-pad.

Which do you prefer; rechargeable pack or rechargeable AAs? If you’re using regular AAs, what’s it like living in a world where money means nothing?
