Because you should be. Mixing retro high school classics like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink with contemporary adolescent existential drama and telekinetic superpowers, Netflix’s new show is your next must-binge.
Sydney Novak (Sophia Lillis, who debuted as Beverly from the 2017 It reboot) is a kid with issues. Her dad committed suicide, she’s not over it, and sometimes, when she gets upset, she kind of accidentally obliterates things with her brain. Its not exactly ambiguous metaphors about puberty and awkward teen romance notwithstanding, I’m Not Okay With This breaks with some of the more virtuous conventions of its John Hughes conceits, introducing protagonists whose questionable sexual prospects and casual drug use aren’t moral plots to be resolved. Instead, it’s Sydney’s increasingly turbulent emotions and the consequences of those, dialling up a sort of subtle dread to an abruptly shocking finale that you won’t soon forget.
It’s dark, it’s funny, it’s provocative, and if it’s not renewed for a second season, I’m going to be so mad.
