Jordan Peele’s Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman trailer has got me hooked

Hooked. Get it? Because he uses a hook. Subscribe for more hilarious and original jokes.

Based on Clive Barker’s story The Forbidden, the original 1992 Candyman is a budget indie sleepover party classic, about a black slave’s son who’s lynched and murdered by his white lover’s scandalised daddy, and now exists as a sort of transdimensional demon beekeeper in a Chicago slum who, when summoned, eviscerates his victims with – remember? – a hook. Like you do.

Written and produced by Get Out and Us director Jordan Peele, the 2020 “re-imagining” promises more of the same gratuitous gross-outs and socioeconomic and political subtext, and introduces new millennial protagonists Anthony and his girlfriend Brianna whose recent move to a gentrified suburb prompts a big mistake that gen-x kids could totally have warned them about.

With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifyingly viral wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.

Todd Tony also reprises his iconic role as the Candyman, so that’s fun. Exquisite, almost.

It’s out in June.
