Must have been all those coins we tossed.
Fueled by the success of Netflix’s The Witcher series, which brought the world together in appreciation of Henry Cavill’s sexful grumbling, the subsequent 554% increase in sales of the game series, and the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for the Nintendo Switch last year, Poland-based CD Projekt has seen their value soar from $6.8 billion to over $8 billion in the past few months. This makes them the second largest video game company in Europe.
They’re actually not that far away from pushing France’s Ubisoft Entertainment off the top spot, since the Assassin’s Creed developer is currently valued at about $9.6 billion. Cyberpunk 2077 is coming for you, Ubisoft.
CD Projekt is a Polish company that started out providing localisation services for games developers back in the 90s. While working on BioWare and Interplay Entertainment’s PC port of Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, Interplay fell apart and the project was cancelled. However, CD Projekt owned the code, so they decided (even though they had no idea how) to use it to develop their own game based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s popular (in Poland) Wiedźmin book series. They founded their games development studio, CD Projekt Red, in 2002, released The Witcher in 2007 and, well, here we are.
Cyberpunk 2077 is due out on 17 September 2020.
