With over 15 years of his life spent on Gears of War, The Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson is moving on to join Blizzard and the Diablo 4 team.
He announced his departure on Twitter today.
Starting in March, I will join Blizzard to oversee the Diablo franchise. Leaving is bittersweet as I love our Gears family, the fans, and everyone at The Coalition and Xbox. Thank you, it has been an honor and a privilege to work with you all. pic.twitter.com/0FuO3RFYSQ

Fergusson has been involved with every Gears of War game since the very beginning at Epic Games, joining The Coalition to oversee the series’ development when Microsoft bought the Gears franchise in 2014. He hopes you will all play the PC-only Gears Tactics spinoff when it comes out on 28 April 2020. From March, he’ll be starting “a new adventure” over at Blizzard, overseeing the Diablo franchise.
Blizzard announced Diablo 4 in November 2019, but the game’s release is still a good couple of years off.
So, yes, no drama, the guy just wants to try something new; fair enough. I guess we’ll find out how much Fergusson-magic contributed to the success of the franchise when Gears 6 rolls around.
