So, it wasn’t PUBG, the abysmal marketing, or alienating the casual player base in favour of #skilledAF hardcore gamers. No, LawBreakers was just too darn political to succeed.
CliffyB has been musing over the reasons why his post-Epic forays into game development failed so very hard and has come to the conclusion that it’s because he’s too nice and LawBreakers was too woke. This is according to a recent post on his Instagram feed.
One big epiphany I had was that I pushed my own personal political beliefs in a world that was increasingly divided.
Instead of the story being “this game looks neat” it became “this is the game with the ‘woke bro’ trying to push his hackey politics on us with gender neutral bathrooms.”
Yes, Cliff, it was your pesky views on gender equality that did you in.
He also believes he should have been “less nice” and “more of a dictator” when dealing with the Boss Key Productions game development team. Cool?
LawBreakers launched in 2017 with a decent critical response but minimal player interest, competing against other online shooters, like Overwatch, that didn’t actively try to dissuade you from playing unless you had hardcore skillz. Boss Key then released Radical Heights in 2018, but closed up shop shortly thereafter.
Anyway, Bleszinski has moved on from the gaming world by investing in Broadway theatre and is currently in the process of writing a memoir, so hopefully this is the last we’ll be hearing about all this.
