The president of HTC in China, Alvin Wang Graylin, recently did a talk on VR trends that included slides that referenced Left 4 Dead 3, giving us all hope for a better future; which Valve swiftly crushed.
One of Graylin’s VR predictions for 2020 was that “Valve HL Alyx/L4D3 will drive consumer and AAA studio interest”. And they probably would if Left 4 Dead 3 was a thing. Valve quickly stepped in to deny the threequel’s existence in a statement made to IGN.
We did briefly explore some Left 4 Dead next gen opportunities a few years ago. But we are absolutely not working on anything L4D related now, and haven’t for years.
Valve is, apparently, triskaphobic – we’ve all got our quirks. That doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing Left 4 Dead VR at some point in the distant future, because that’s what Valve is all about now. It took them 16 years to go from Half-Life 2 to Half-Life: Alyx, so there’s still time.
It’s okay, though, because the upcoming Back 4 Blood is a spiritual successor to the Left 4 Dead series, made by the people that developed Left 4 Dead, so who even needs Valve, anyway?
