Amazon has chosen not to film a pilot episode for their adaptation of part of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series – oh, Discordia!
Unsurprisingly, Amazon is finding that (horror-fantasy-magic-cowboy-epic) The Dark Tower is very difficult to adapt to TV, even after choosing to focus on, arguably, the least weird part of the story – the prequel bits about young Roland from the fourth book, Wizard and Glass. However, it sounds like they’ve actually tried to simplify it too much, as sources suggest lack of scope might be the problem. It’s competing for attention against Amazon’s The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings, after all.
This is a shame, mostly because they’d promised us billy bumblers, but all is not entirely lost, as showrunner Glen Mazzara is already asking around at other networks. There is a chance that someone else might take the beleaguered adaptation on.
Meanwhile, the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, related to The Dark Tower but involving fewer magic cowboys, appears to be coming along quite well, over at CBS, and is set for release some time at the end of 2020.
