Square Enix has had two attempts at bringing Final Fantasy XV to mobile, so maybe third time’s the charm.
In 2017, there was Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire, which was basically a multiplayer, base-builder game with a FFXV overlay. If you were expecting anything resembling a FFXV MMORPG, you would’ve been disappointed. Then, in 2018, came Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition; an abridged, chibified take on the FFXV game for people that liked the story but didn’t have the time to explore every facet of the expansive world.
Now, Square Enix (in partnership with JSC Games, and GAEA Mobile) is having another go, with what they’re currently calling Final Fantasy XV Mobile. This time, it’s a parallel universe version of FFXV, taking place just after Noctis starts his journey, that will feature new regions and combat and graphics reminiscent of the 2016 original; all built using Unreal Engine 4.
While Final Fantasy XV Mobile will initially release in China, there are, apparently, plans for an international release to follow. Look out for a trailer some time in the first half of this year.
