Provocative new PS5 logo debut stuns CES 2020

Revealed at the company’s CES 2020 press conference in Las Vegas this week, Sony’s introduction of its next-gen console branding has much-wowed fans and critics with its intrepid, postmodern geometry and unquestionable commitment to consistency, replacing the numbers of previous-gen consoles with an innovative but entirely unpretentious “5” and keeping everything else the same.

“It’s a work of genius,” gushes Guy Imadeup, who was in the audience at the time. Applauding its “disruptive use of negative space”, “unconventional, even erratic kerning between typographic components”, and “abstract colour choices that juxtapose the sombre tones of dusk with an almost impertinent glazed ivory”, he was also impressed by its more subtle implications.

“Its ironic subversions of neocapitalist absurdity and deconceptual dialectic paradigms interpolates with autonomous class theory and reality as an expression of pretextual narrative paradox and sociopolitical debt to the status quo,” he explains. “Lol.”

Sony did not show the actual PS5 console.
