According to Xbox head Phil Spencer, hardly anyone was interested in their next-gen console having virtual reality capability, so it won’t. Also, Xbox is for people with friends.
In a recent interview, Spencer revealed that neither Xbox One nor Project Scarlett will be getting VR-friendly features. This is because the customer interest, and potential for profit, just isn’t there.
We’re responding to what our customers are asking for and… nobody’s asking for VR.
VR capability might be added in the future, though, if interest picks up. Spencer also suggested that gaming should be communal and that VR was “isolating”, so, if you want the VR experience, you best get on over to a PC, preferably a Microsoft one, you filthy hermits – Xbox is all about community.
Are you happy that Xbox won’t be wasting any time or energy on VR, for their current and next-gen consoles, or are they missing an opportunity? The PlayStation 5 is launching with a shiny new PlayStation VR2 headset to go with it, but will that mean it’s lacking in other areas? Do you have friends? What’s that like?
Project Scarlett will launch in 2020.
