Netflix’s The Sandman series will not be an 80s period piece

Back in July, we mentioned that Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman comic series will be getting a Netflix adaptation and, now, we know a little bit more about what it’s about.

In a recent interview, Gaiman confirmed that he will be an executive producer and writer for the series, so they intend to “stay faithful to The Sandman”. However, they’ll be doing this while also contemporising the story, which originally takes place in the 1980s.

In the original story, Morpheus/Dream/Oneiros, the main character, was captured in 1916 and released in 1988, but the update will have him released only around 2019, adding about 30 years to his purgatory. Shame. So, there will be some changes, but Gaiman would like to assure you all that Morpheus will be pretty much the same.

He’s a gloomy sort of bugger. He’s not quite human, but he does have absolute standards and responsibilities and tries to fulfil his moral obligations even if his standards are not human.

Also, his appearance will change, as it does in the books. I imagine that means multiple actors will be cast to play him, sort of like they’ve done with the Altered Carbon series. So far, no casting decisions have been announced.

The Sandman Netflix series does not have a set release date, yet.
