Since the 2018 introduction of its cross-play beta with a limited selection of games including Fortnite and Rocket League, Sony has apparently become much more comfortable with the prospects of ending its previous nuh-uh policy – and now decided it’s time to do this thing for reals.
Talking to Wired, Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan confirms – perhaps not exactly explicitly, but close enough – that the program is exiting beta, and support for cross-play functionality will be available to developers in future. Although the company has consistently maintained top position in the console market this generation, Ryan recognises that innovation is necessary.
“The track record of the incumbent platform winning the next time around is not a great one,” he explains. “So the major thrust of my executive energy is to avoid complacency.”
Out on 25 October, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare features cross-play between PS4, Xbox One, and PC – the first game to support this at launch, but not the last.
