Someone tell Riot to slow down; it’s only been ten years since they released League of Legends and now a, long suspected, fighting game is in the works.
Confirmed at EVO 2019, by founder of the Evolution Championship Series Tom Cannon, Riot Games is working on their first new project since League of Legends, and it’s a fighting game. This probably isn’t a surprise to anyone who has been following Riot’s activity for the past few years.
Back in 2016, Riot acquired Radiant Entertainment, a game development studio founded by brothers Tom and Tony Cannon. The studio had previously developed an online fighting game, called Rising Thunder, that was cancelled and then released, for free, as an open-source version, after Riot took over. The team behind it then moved on to a mystery project that was rumoured to be a new fighting game for Riot.
Seems those rumours were true. We don’t know much about Riot’s latest endeavor, but Cannon said that, despite the genre’s popularity, “we felt that fighting games needed to be enjoyed by way more people”. So, Riot is working on a fighting game for the masses, it seems.
Could a fighting game ever be as big as LoL? Let’s find out together.
