As previously mentioned, Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok and anything else good) was all set to direct a film adaptation of the Akira manga, but it looks like that’s going to be indefinitely delayed due to him being recently announced as writer and director on Thor 4. He’s only one beautiful, witty, intelligent man, guys, he can only do so much.
The live-action Akira was given a 2021 release date, actors were being tested, and filming was about to start, but delays in production meant it would be bumping up against Thor 4 which made everyone uncomfortable, since Waititi is directing that too. The MCU waits for no man, so Akira is going to have to hang around until filming Thor 4 is over or get another director… again.
This is just the latest in a line of production issues reaching all the way back to 2012, including script disagreements and budgetary concerns. It’s also been through a few directors already.
But who cares about any of that, because TAIKA WAITITI’S COMING BACK FOR THOR 4! There are no plot details yet, but it’ll probably have at least one Hemsworth in it.
What did we learn today? Just because they set a release date, doesn’t mean it’s actually going to happen. Believe it when you see the trailer and, sometimes, not even then.
