One of the guys responsible for a series of DDoS attacks on Sony Online Entertainment (now Daybreak Games Company) and other game servers has been convicted in a US federal court of “Damage to a Protected Computer”, with a booby prize of 27 months in lockup and a $95,000 stupidity tax.
Utah resident Austin Thompson, a member of the “DerpTrolling” hacker group, was busted by the FBI and pleaded guilty in November to the charges, which included a number of DDoS attacks on SOE, Blizzard, DOTA 2, and League of Legends game servers in 2013 and 2014. As part of a plea agreement, according to Polygon, Thompson owned up to managing the group’s public Twitter account, used at the time to announce and confirm its activities, and presumably traceable to him via IP. And, I mean, I’m not a lawyer, but this sort of sloppy indiscretion should totally be a crime on its own. I guess the clue is in the name.
GG WP EZ.
